Thomas Kelly Cheyne (1841 - 1915) English divine and Biblical critic, was born in London, and educated at Merchant Taylors' School and Oxford. Subsequently he studied German theological methods at Göttingen. He was ordained in 1864, and held a fellowship at Balliol College, Oxford, 1868-1882. During the earlier part of this period he stood alone in the university as a teacher of the main conclusions of Old Testament criticism at that time. In 1881 he was presented to the rectory of Tendring, in Essex, and in 1884 he was made a member of the Old Testament revision company. He resigned the living of Tendring in 1885 on his appointment to the Oriel professorship, which carried with it a canonry at Rochester. In 1889 he delivered the Bampton lectures at Oxford. In 1908 he resigned his professorship.
He consistently urged in his writings the necessity of a broad and comprehensive study of the Scriptures in the light of literary, historical and scientific considerations. His publications include commentaries on the Prophets and Hagiographa, and lectures and addresses on theological subjects. He was a joint editor of the Encyclopaedia Biblica (London, 1899-1903), a work embodying the more advanced conclusions of English biblical criticism. In the introduction to his Origin of the Psalter (London, 1891) he gave an account of his development as a critical scholar. An article referring to him as Canon Cheyne was published in the Thursday the 11th of August 1904, page 2, edition of The Daily News, Perth, Australia reads: "BIBLICAL CRITICISM.
CANON CHEYNE ON BABYLONISH MYTHOLOGY.
Canon Cheyne, the distinguished author of the "Encyclopaedia Biblica" addressed the Churchmen's Union at Westminster on June 15, on "the discovery of new facts and justification of a more searching Biblical criticism." Contending for free and untrammelled criticism in the cause of progress, Canon Cheyne held that the national Church was not merely a hospital for the morally sick, but a union of men devoted to the highest ideals and to historic truth. He said it could be shown easily that some of the narratives in the Old Testament were colored by Oriental mythology. The earlier chapters of Genesis and such stories as Jonah in the big fish were semi-mythical and Oriental in origin, showing the influence of Babylonia. Certain elements in the Bible were borrowed from a culture older and richer than the Jewish.
"I have no intention of giving any shock," said Canon Cheyne, in touching upon the virgin birth of the Redeemer. But he claimed that the new facts brought to light showed that the Jewish narrator had derived it from a non-Jewish source, and that was the mythology of Babylonia and Egypt. The use of the word "virgin" arose out of a misunderstanding of the meaning of the original word, which referred to the Divine generation of certain favored perrons. As a historian, he could not refuse to recognise tho possibility, of this origin of the story.
After showing how many names of people, and places in the Old Testament were wrong, he said there were two great works remaining to be done. One was to find oui what meanings the editors of the Old Testament put upon the books when they had suffered much corruption. The other was to complete an improved textual criticism".16

Thomas K. Cheyne married Elizabeth Gibson 1911, in Falmouth District, Cornwall, England. The marriage of Thomas K. Cheyne and Elizabeth Gibson was recorded in the third quarter of 1911, in Falmouth District, Cornwall, England.17

He consistently urged in his writings the necessity of a broad and comprehensive study of the Scriptures in the light of literary, historical and scientific considerations. His publications include commentaries on the Prophets and Hagiographa, as well as lectures and addresses on theological subjects. He was a joint editor of the Encyclopaedia Biblica (London, 1899–1903), a work embodying the more advanced conclusions of English biblical criticism. In the introduction to his Origin of the Psalter (London, 1891) he gave an account of his development as a critical scholar. His publications include translations, commentaries, and supplimental research.18

Effects £6120 17s. 7d.".20

An obituary was published in The Hebrew Standard of Australia, Sydney, Friday, the 16th of April 1915, page 14, which read: "DEATH OF DR. CHEYNE.
The death of Dr. Cheyne, the Biblical Critic and Hebraist, which occurred recently, removes from the field of biblical scholarship one to whom Jews must always he indebted for much new light shed on the Holy Scriptures, both as critic and commentator. As Dr. Israel Abrahams, a close personal friend of the deceased, in the course of a lengthy obituary notice contributed to the "Jewish Chronicle," said: He delved with reverence as well as with genius. It is, however, his work on the Hebrew Bible which earned Cheyne his renown. From his first appearance on the scene, with a book on Isaiah (1868), it was recognised that a new and fresh force had arisen. Cheyne was no mere echo, of continental learning. He was an accomplished philologist, but his services were literary as well as scientific. He understood the spirit of his author; he expounded with insight; he illustrated with marvellous judgment; and this whether he was writing of the Psalms (1888), or on Isaiah (1880), or on Micah and Hosea (1895), to mention some of his more important editions. He knew the Hebrew Bible by heart. That statement is no hyperbole; it is a literal fact. The present writer spent a whole month with Cheyne in the Isle of Wight some twenty years ago. Daily, Biblical passages were discussed. But Cheyne had no Hebrew Bible with him. He simply said: "I do not need one." And in truth he did not. He could quote, chapter and verse, every line of the original Hebrew, and he was surprised to be told that every Jew was not equally adept. Certainly if anyone had the right to comment on the Bible it was Cheyne. Small wonder that we owe to him some of the most conspicuous merits of the Revised Version".21
