My father, Ernest, and his family would sometimes visit his uncle James (01194) at his farm. James had many children and at meal times he would prepare each with their serving and then call out their name to come to get it. One of James' children fell from a farm wagon and was impaled by a pitchfork. The mother simply pulled the pitchfork from the boy and nursed him back to health.6

He was employed at Paige Detroit Motor Car Company, Detroit, Michigan, from March 1920 until December 1923.
I often wondered why so many Fraserburgh Cheynes (and others) when immigrating to the US go directly to Detroit? During my 1991 visit to Fraserburgh, I found that the parent company of the Pneumatics Plant in Fraserburgh is in Detroit. Did Ernest, and the others, have a job in the U. S. through this connection?
The attached is a postcard photo of Alexander, Margaret and Ernest Cheynes, with Laurence Armitage, taken in the mid 1920s, probably in Detroit.

Goodyear held a licence from the government and Vought Aircraft to build the Corsair F4U-1 (through F4U-4), the Goodyear versions were identified as the FG-1 (through FG-4).
Corsair would be the first aircraft to make extensive use of a new spot welding technique developed jointly by Vought and the Naval Aircraft Factory (F4U Corsair). Before the Corsair contract, Goodyear Aircraft Corp. had been a "one-at-a-time" built blimp producer. Goodyear's new contract required that it become a mass-producer of fighter aircraft. My father was an engineer experienced in mass production and of assembly line welding techniques. As soon as Corsair was certified as airworthy, he was transferred to Goodyear's new aircraft plant in Arizona.16

Alpha Mae Eaton
F, #33, b. 12 July 1911, d. 5 December 2001
Father | Alpheus Aaron Eaton b. 2 Mar 1885 |
Mother | Lou Mae Hunter b. 7 Jun 1878, d. 6 Mar 1952 |
Alpha Mae Eaton was born, 12 July 1911, at 3:00 PM, in Wellsville, Columbiana, Ohio, USA
. She was born in the house at corner of Center Street and Main.1,2,3
Maribel Morgan, Frieda M. Morgan, Maurice Wilmer Morgan, Alice Etta Morgan and Alpha Mae Eaton were listed as children in the household of Lou Eaton on the 1920 United States Census, at Harper Street, in Clarksburg, Harrison, West Virginia, USA
.4
In 1921, Lou and her daughter, Alpha, moved to Morgantown, West Virginia. They remained there only 2 or 3 months. The other children stayed in Clarksburg. Lou worked as a cook, at a boarding-house owned by one of the coal mining companies. This was at a time of labor unrest. The miners were on strike there. The Miners Union was headed by the firebrand, John L. Lewis. The union had threatened to blow up the house. This was because the mine was providing the house to the strike-breakers.
During this time of separation the other three daughters, Maribel, Frieda and Etta, lived in an apartment on Main Street, near Parson-Souders Department Store, in Clarksburg. Maribel was working at Clarksburg Wholesale Company, Frieda was in training to become a Registered Nurse and Etta was still attending Washington Irving High School.
After Lucy came back from Morgantown, about 1922, all the girls lived with her, on Chapel Street, behind the Methodist Church. Across the street lived the family of the future Senator Claude Pepper of Florida. Etta had typhoid fever while here. They moved to the house next door. Then to School Street, for 4-5 years. Freida died there, after being bed-ridden for two years, in 1924.
They next moved to 614 West Pike Street, still in Clarksburg, where Lucy rented out rooms. During this time Alpha worked at the Clarksburg Dairy, where she worked a total of nine years. Both Etta and Alpha later married routemen who also worked at the dairy.
Alpha lived at 614 West Pike Street and attended Washington Irving High School. She later worked at the Clarksburg Dairy. It is here that she meets her first husband, Robert Sutton. He was a routeman for the dairy. She would tell of the horses that knew the routes, almost better than the drivers. The horse would stop at each house, without direction from the driver. After all deliveries, the horse would return to the dairy, practically at a gallop.
At the dairy, her boss was James Wesley Law, who I am named after. Mr. Law was the President of the Clarksburg Rotary Club. He was also the treasurer of the First Methodist Church. She worked at the dairy for nine years. She also attended West Virginia Business College two hours a day.
Alpha Mae Eaton and Maribel Morgan were listed as children in the household of Lou Eaton on the 1930 United States Census, at 614 West Pike Street, in Clarksburg, Harrison, West Virginia, USA
. She was also listed as a bookkeeper at a dairy.2
Alpha May Eaton married Robert Andrew Sutton 16 June 1930, in Clarksburg, Harrison, West Virginia, USA
. The marriage took place in the home of Rev. Slater, pastor of the Methodist Church in Clarksburg.5,6,7
Attached is a photo of Alpha and Robert, dated 3 July 1932, probably in Clarksburg.8
The attached photo taken of my mother, Alpha Eaton and her sister, Maribel Morgan, taken about 1933.
Alpha Mae Eaton was divorced from Robert Andrew Sutton 15 May 1937 in Clarksburg, Harrison, West Virginia, USA
.9
She moved to Detroit, Michigan to try to make a better living. Here she met my father. I remember a story he told me. "They were both at a Halloween party. The party was hosted by mutual friends. At midnight my mother said to him to remove his mask. To which he replied, that he was not wearing a mask; and she fainted". He borrowed a book from her, and kept forgetting to return it. Thus prolonging the budding romance.
Alpha M. E. Sutton married Ernest Cheyne 3 July 1937, at Metropolitan Methodist Church, in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA
. She was listed as 25 years old, a secretary, divorcee, and residing in Detroit. Her parents were confirmed to be as recorded herein. Her long time friend, Pearl Tifft, was one of the witnesses. The ceremony was officiated by M. S. Rice, clergyman.10,11

Front Row: Michael O'Grady, Bob Sutton, Jim Cheyne (front), Marilou O'Grady, Patty Morgan, Etta O'Grady.12
Alpha Cheyne and her husband, Ernest Cheyne, were listed on the 1940 United States Census, at 1483 Field Avenue, in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA
. They were listed as the head of household and wife. In addition, his step-son, Robert Sutton Cheyne, and mother-in-law, Lou Eaton, were also present. The family rented their home. She was listed as 28 years old and born in Ohio. She resided in Clarksburg, West Virginia in 1935.3
During World War II she was a volunteer Nurse's Aide at Saint Joseph Hospital in downtown Phoenix. Another Nurse's Aide, was Peggy Goldwater, wife of Barry Goldwater, who will later become the Senior Senior from Arizona, but then a Army Air Corps pilot. Peggy would read parts of the letters that Barry wrote, describing the heroism and bravery that he saw every day of his comrades-in-arms.13
The attached sidewalk photo taken of my mother, left, her sisters, Etta, center, and Maribel, taken about 1949, in Phoenix.
She recorded the death of her mother, Lou Eaton, who died 6 March 1952 at Maricopa County Hospital, Phoenix, Maricopa, Arizona, USA
; of arteriosclerosis and diabetes.14,15
About 1957, she sold the house on Central Avenue and bought a new one on 15th Avenue just south of Northern Avenue. There she will spend most of the remainder of her life. She and her third husband will lead a life of retirement and take great pleasure in caring for the lovely house and yard.13
Alpha Cheyne married Garrett William Roberts 29 June 1959, in accordance with the procedures of the Methodist Church, at First Methodist Church, in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
. The service was officiated by Rev. Charles Kimball. Kimball was the long time minister at the Central Methodist Church in Phoenix, there she had been a member since 1943.16
In the mid 1970s Albert Mathias closed it's Phoenix location. Alpha started her own business known as Alpha's Interiors which she operated for several years.
About 1990, she began caring for several of the "old" ladies residing at The Beatitudes Campus of Care (Beatitudes). Beatitudes was one of the first care centers in the country. It provides all levels of care; from independent living to full time 24 hour care of its seniors. She will sell her 15th Avenue house and moved there herself about 1997-98 to live out her life there.13
Alpha Cheyne Roberts died on 5 December 2001 at Phoenix Baptist Hospital in Phoenix, Maricopa, Arizona, USA
. Her obituary which appeared in the Arizona Republic, Sunday, December 17, 2001 read: Alpha "Happy" Cheyne Roberts was born the fifth child of Lucy Mae Hunter Eaton. Her father was Alpheus Aaron Eaton a steel worker in Wellsville. Ohio, 12 July 1911. Her siblings were Maribel Vorrhis, Frieda Morgan, Maurice Wilmer Morgan and Alice Etta O'Grady, all deceased. Her older sisters gave her the nickname, Happy, which is the name her friends called her until her death, 5 December 2001. She also outlived her three husbands, Robert Andrew Sutton, Ernest Cheyne and Garrett William Roberts.
World War II brought her young family to Phoenix in 1943. They lived on the outskirts of town at Central Avenue and Thomas Road. She joined the Central Methodist Church and has been a loyal member for 58 years. She was employed by Albert Mathias and Company, a wholesale furniture distributor for many years.
Happy had two sons, Robert A. Sutton, a retired Mechanical Engineer, in San Diego and James W. Cheyne, a lighting control representative, in Phoenix. They provided her with six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
She was an avid traveler, having visited all 50 states and over 90 countries. She did not allow her age to keep her from her passion of traveling; she visited her church's mission in Kenya at 85 and, at 88, strode the Great Wall of China. Her last trip was a cruise with her niece, Mary Stouffer of Oregon City, Oregon, just six months ago from Europe to Greenland, Iceland and Maritime Provinces. The highlight of the trip, for her, was swimming in the Blue Lagoon.
A memorial service is planned for 2 PM, January 30, 2002, at the Life Center, Beatitudes Campus of Care, 1668 West Glendale Avenue. Donations to the Arizona Heart Institute Foundation or the Beatitudes Foundation are requested in lieu of flowers.

Charles Armitage
M, #45, b. 21 June 1840, d. 15 February 1911
Father | Evan Armitage b. a 1811, d. 1877 |
Mother | Mary Mellor b. Apr 1810, d. 1846 |
Charles Armitage was born, 21 June 1840, in Kirkheaton, Yorkshire, England
. The parentage of Charles is based on a hand written note from my grandmother, Sarah Sophia Armitage, the daughter of this Charles. In one place she said Charles had four sisters and one brother AND his parents were William Armitage and Mary. A William and Mary Armitage nee Senior were found. They had been married in Kirkheaton parish a few years before the birth of Charles in that parish, but he was never found with them on a census and he would have had the wrong number of siblings. A compelling case can be had for them, in that they have later moved to Ashton-Under-Lyne Parish.
The family as placed here had the correct number of siblings AND the father was named Evan. Charles will have a son named John Evan, who appears to have been named for his two grandfathers, John Wood and Evan Armitage. The only Charles Armitage listed of the 1851 census born +/- 5years of 1841 in Kirkheaton Parish was this Charles. (There were only eight in that time period for the whole of Yorkshire.)
My grandmother's note contained several other errors. I believe that the naming of William and Mary may have also been an error. Did she mean Evan and Mary? [N.B.-William (534) and Mary (539) are included in the database.]1,2,3,4
Charles Armitage was baptized in accordance with the procedures of the Church of England, 27 September 1840, in Kirkheaton, Saint John the Baptist Parish, Yorkshire, England
. The entry in the Parish Register reads: "BAPTISMS solemnized in the Parish of Kirkheaton in the County of York in the Year 1840...Sept'r 27...B'n 21th June 1840. Charles Son of Even (sic) & Mary Armitage (residing in) Moor Top Heaton, Smith (By) Jno. Alston, Curate".5,6

. He was head of household and a grocer. Also present were his children, John Evan Armitage, Mary Armitage, Edward Armitage and Bessie Jane Armitage.10
Charles Armitage and his wife Sarah M. Armitage were listed on the 1881 England Census, at 21 Bradgate Street, in Ashton Under Lyne, Saint Peters Parish, Lancashire, England
. He was head of household and a grocer. Also present were his children, John Evan Armitage, Mary Armitage, Edward Armitage, William Armitage, Sarah S. Armitage, Ernest Armitage and Lucy Armitage.11

. He was head of household and a grocer. Also present were his children, John Evan Armitage, Edward Armitage, William Armitage, Ernest Armitage and Lucy Armitage. All children were listed as grocer's assistants. Not present was George, who would have been about 10.12
